Tried and Tested Tips and Tricks for DIY AC Maintenance

There is nothing as annoying as when the Air Conditioner is not working, and not just annoying but also very dangerous to have a dysfunctional AC. luckily, you do not have to resign to fate and continue getting annoyed all the time thanks to some tried and tested AC maintenance hacks documented on here. Here are some of the basic maintenance tips to get you started on a functional and effective air conditioning unit throughout the year.

Always ensure your AC unit is as clean as it can get, this can never be overemphasized enough if you are to get the most out of your unit. The process of cleaning the fins is quite simple and straightforward when you remove the fan cage from the outer part of the unit. This can be done by hand or using a vacuum that has a soft bristle head. There are also specialized fin sprays in the market that you can use especially when faced with stubborn dirt. It is also advisable that you straighten the fins of your AC unit as you are cleaning them in case they are crooked. At the very least, you will be assured of quality air flowing at optimal speeds without having the fins blocking airflow.

It is also highly recommended that you have the blower air filters changed twice a year. The best times to do this would be just before summer and just before winter kicks in. While at it, be sure you are replacing the air filters with the right size and model as the one that you are getting out. AC maintenance is also about unclogging the condensate drain tubes on a regular basis.

You don’t want the condensate to create bacteria that will eventually facilitate the formation of slime, now do you? Now, when slime comes into the picture, it means the pan drain tube will be compromised, and your unit will not function properly. You might also want to have a closer look at the evaporator coil to ensure optimal performance of your unit. All you need to do unscrew it from the coil door, and you can then use a soft brush to get rid of the dust piled up. While at it, you can use some warm, soapy water with bleach to clean the drain pan. Even so, it is highly recommended that you have a professional come in and check your AC unit if you are unsure of what needs to be done and especially when there is some squeaky sound coming from the unit.
